Missions
As
a Christian football club, Westside FC also undertakes overseas
Missions and gives support to those who love football
but are not as lucky as us to have ready access to equipment, good
pitches and the love of God.
Senegal and Sierra Leone
In
August 2004, Westside FC took a squad of 23 players and support
staff to Senegal in West Africa.
The trip was
arranged in conjunction
with WEC International and the purpose was to run coaching clinics
for local youngsters, play matches against local sides and to
work with local Churches to show how football can be used to spread
the Gospel.
It was supported by Surrey
County FA who donated
equipment,
that was gifted at the end of the mission to the local Churches
and football clubs so that they could continue to run these activities.
We
are currently planning to return again in August 2007 and are starting
our fundraising for this trip – 2004 cost £28,000!
In
addition to our work in Senegal, we have established a link with
two clubs – FC Lamin and FC Tonny – in Sierra Leone.
In
January 2006, the players of Westside FC donated unwanted football
kit and equipment which was taken out to Sierre Leone and given
away to needy kids and the two football teams.
We now have in place
a continuous collection of unwanted football kit which we will
send or take to both Senegal and Sierra Leone.
Romania
Since
1998 Westside FC, through a number of the local Churches (that some
of the players attend) have had a connection with Fundatia
Integro.
Fundatia Integro
is a Christian group based near the Carpathian Mountains in the
heart of Transylvania.
Many of our players have been to the country on a regular basis
to work in summer camps for needy children, and to work with the
organisation in the local area, gypsy villages and with the disadvantage
families on the region.
The camps
give the children a chance to get away from their daily life's and
and to have an opportunity to learn new skills, made to feel special
and have a short holiday of a lifetime that they would only have
dreamt of.
A wide range of activities are run for the children, ranging from,
arts and craft, drama, music, English lessons, adventure trails
up in the mountains and multiple sports including Football coaching
sessions.
Three members of the club are heavily involved in this project.
If you would like to know more about the work in Romania, please
contact Alex.
UK
As
a number of the Management team and players are qualified coaches
(FA or Uefa) we are able to run coaching clinics here in
the UK or to provide
a football day at other organisations camps etc.
If
you wish to know any more about our Mission work or would like to
help with our fundraising, please contact Graham
Holder, our Director of Football.
